Our Community & Centre

The Holiday Centre is part of our Community Centre in Kiltyclogher containing the hall, communal kitchen and the apartments.. The centre is used for local events and by local groups for meeting, youth group, festivals and charity events. The centre is kept going by the small income generated by these events and the upkeep of the holiday centre is funded through grants and paying guests. The centre was once a vocational school until it was badly damaged in 1973 by a bomb. The school was then re-built as a community centre and some of the rooms were used as a hostel. Originally named the Leitrim Lakes holiday hostel it was first opened in 1996 by United States Ambassador to Ireland Jean Kennedy-Smith. In the early 2000's the hostel section was renovated again and two of the rooms made int self-contained apartments with an additional apartment added at the back of the centre. It was rebranded as Kiltyclogher Holiday Centre.

Our Community Centre, Holiday Centre and Heritage Centre are looked after by our Community Council and volunteers within our community.

Shortly before 3 a.m. on Tuesday last the Vocational School at Kiltyclogher, Co. Leitrim, a few hundred yards from the Border, was extensively damaged by a bomb. The bomb, estimated to have contained 120 lbs. of gelignite, was placed inside the two - storey building, but there was no casualties as there was no one near the building at the time. The school had been reconstructed and modernised in 1965 at a cost of 65,000 pounds. The damage is estimated at 100,000 pounds. Local Gardai cordoned off the area and carried out a search. Later Army explosive experts searched through the rubble for clues. The school closed for the summer holidays last week. Our picture shows the extent of the exterior destruction.
